“The problem of the burka is not a religious problem. This is an issue of a woman’s freedom and dignity. This is not a religious symbol. It is a sign of subservience; it is a sign of lowering. I want to say solemnly, the burka is not welcome in France.”

Reading this quotation alone sent a flood of opinions through my brain, one of them being “this is utter crap.” Clearly, the use of the burqa as mandated by law is not exactly fair to women, but to set a limitation on its use, especially in public spaces, is just as bad, if not worse.

The American Medical Association voted Tuesday on a resolution that would recommend hospitals ban doctors’ iconic white lab coats, citing evidence that the garment contributes to the spread of infection. (The resolution was referred to a panel for further consideration.)* Indeed, a number of studies have shown that the coats harbor potentially harmful bacteria (and may cause “white coat hypertension”). If white coats are so bad, why do doctors still wear them?

“It’s a cliche to say that writers don’t always look too impressive - but even by the standards of his profession, the little man waiting in the restaurant foyer is a curious spectacle. Can we forgive North by Northwest its Da Vinci Code legacy?:

North by Northwest - re-released in selected UK cinemas - has attracted a fair bit of attention on this site, mainly as a stick with which to beat films that came after. For David Thomson, it’s sad proof today’s directors lack the signature style so in evidence here. John Patterson bemoans the way in which its “series of eye-poppingly inventive sequences linked in the loosest way imaginable by a breathtakingly slender plotline” became a template eagerly borrowed by the Bond franchise and “every crappy action movie since 1980”.

1970s girl band the Nolans are reforming for a 15-date tour of the UK, they have revealed. Four of the six singing sisters, best known for I’m In The Mood For Dancing - a number three hit in December 1979 - will perform in the concerts.
